Pedro Marques

Pedro Marques is a European Portuguese Teaching Professor at Queen Mary University of London's Modern Languages and Cultures department, part of the Languages, Linguistics and Film School. He has taught Portuguese since 2018 and coordinates the Portuguese section's outreach programs. His academic background includes a BA and MA in Portuguese and English Studies from Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (2005), an MA in Modern Foreign Languages Education from King’s College London (2017), and a PhD candidate in postmodern Portuguese-language literature at KCL.

His research focuses on Portuguese language education in the UK, 18th-century popular literature, and postmodern literary analysis. He has published extensively on topics such as colonial power dynamics in literature, language policy, and pedagogical approaches for heritage learners. Marques organizes the annual Camões Lecture series featuring prominent figures from Lusophone cultures and runs outreach initiatives to promote Portuguese language and culture among secondary and university students.

Publications highlight his expertise in historical and contemporary Portuguese studies, including analyses of marginalized literary genres like papéis volantes and colonial narratives. His work bridges academic research with practical educational strategies, emphasizing the importance of cultural context in language learning.
