Cary Elza is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Her work bridges film, animation, and media theory with a focus on gender, fandom, and youth cultures.
- PhD in Screen Cultures (Film Studies/Media Studies), Northwestern University
- MA in Film Studies, Emory University
- BA in American Studies, Smith College
Research Interests: Elza specializes in Animation, Film and Media History, and Genre Studies (particularly horror, science fiction, and fantasy). Her scholarship explores intersections of:
- Gender and media representation
- Childhood/youth media cultures
- Fandom practices
- Pre-cinematic and new media technologies
Academic Contributions: Her publications analyze Disney’s Alice Comedies, Pokémon, The X-Files, and vampire series like Twilight, emphasizing how narratives traverse real/imaginary boundaries during technological shifts.
Service & Leadership: Elza serves as Faculty Advisor to Lambda Pi Eta and YouTube Society, and chaired the Historic Preservation Subcommittee. She curated the 2019 exhibit “125 Years of Higher Education in Stevens Point” and engages public audiences through WPR’s Route 51 talks.
