Sarah Nilsen is an Associate Professor of Film and Television Studies at the University of Vermont's College of Arts and Sciences. Her expertise centers on Disney's cultural and historical impact, particularly through its animation, nature documentaries, and global media influence. She has contributed to major documentaries including Mickey: The Story of a Mouse (2022) and Behind the Magic: Snow White (2015).
Her research explores Disney's role in environmental conservation via its 1950s-60s True-Life Adventures nature films and examines how Disney's media shapes societal identities. Nilsen teaches courses on race, class, and gender in media, emphasizing student engagement with personal Disney experiences to understand cultural formation.
Current projects include The Lurking Camera: A History of Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures and a co-edited volume Critical Race Theory and the American Media. Her work challenges underappreciated aspects of Disney's corporate and creative legacy, highlighting its foundational role in animation technology and global entertainment.
