Carrie Menkel-Meadow is the Distinguished and Chancellor’s Professor of Law at UC Irvine School of Law, a founding faculty member. She holds a joint appointment in Political Science and is affiliated with the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies. Previously, she was the A.B. Chettle, Jr. Professor of Dispute Resolution at Georgetown University Law Center, where she directed the Georgetown-Hewlett Program in Conflict Resolution and co-directed UCLA’s Center on Conflict Resolution. Her academic roles include faculty director of the Center for Transnational Legal Studies and visiting professorships at Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Toronto.
Menkel-Meadow’s research focuses on dispute resolution, legal ethics, clinical legal education, and feminist legal theory. She has authored over 200 articles and books, including seminal works like Dispute Resolution: Beyond the Adversarial Model and Negotiation: Processes for Problem Solving. Her work emphasizes process pluralism, mediation ethics, and international conflict resolution.
She has received prestigious awards, including the American Bar Foundation Outstanding Scholar Award (2018) and the ABA’s first-ever Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work (2011). Her accolades also include teaching awards at UCLA and Georgetown, as well as honorary doctorates from KU Leuven and other institutions. She sits on boards for journals like the International Journal of Law in Context and the American Bar Foundation.
Menkel-Meadow has served as a mediator and arbitrator globally, training legal professionals in over 50 countries. She advises international organizations like the UN and World Bank on conflict resolution systems. Her recent work explores hybrid dispute resolution processes, the cultural impact of negotiation, and the role of socio-legal studies in globalized contexts.
