Casandra L. Thomson is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Negotiation & Dispute Resolution Education at Duke University School of Law, where she directs the Program on Negotiation & Dispute Resolution. She teaches upper-level courses in Negotiation, Mediation Advocacy, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Exploring the Roles of Gender and Culture in Negotiation, alongside first-year Legal Analysis, Research & Writing and the 1L Professional Development Program.
Her educational background includes a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School (2000) and a B.A. with distinction in political science from the University of Michigan (1998). She is admitted to the North Carolina bar and several federal courts, with inactive status in California and Illinois.
Thomson's research and professional focus centers on practical dispute resolution methodologies, emphasizing gender dynamics and cultural influences in negotiation. She conducts workshops for Duke Medical School and international law firms while serving as one of four lead trainers for North Carolina's Superior Court Mediator Training Program.
Her significant recognition includes Duke Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018.
Thomson maintains an active mediation practice across multiple jurisdictions as a certified mediator with the International Mediation Institute, North Carolina Superior Court, and New York Peace Institute (CDRC Mediator). She mediates community, housing, and employment discrimination cases through federal partnerships including the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the EEOC. She also serves on the Duke-Leiden Institute faculty and chaired the ABA's Legal Education in Dispute Resolution Committee (2022-2024).
