E. Patrick McDermott is a Professor of Management and Legal Studies and Chair of the Management Department at Salisbury University's Franklin P. Perdue School of Business. He also serves as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Negotiation and Law at the U.S. Air Force Academy. A two-time Fulbright Scholar (Shanghai, China and Bucharest, Romania), his expertise spans labor arbitration, employment law, Chinese industrial relations, and the integration of technology into dispute resolution. He has directed research evaluations for the EEOC mediation program and the TSA Integrated Conflict Management system, and currently leads studies on Online Dispute Resolution (ODR). His recent award-winning article, 'The Repeat Play Effect: Much Ado About Nothing,' addresses labor dispute resolution dynamics.
Education includes a PhD in Human Resource Management (George Washington University, 1998), JD (Rutgers Newark School of Law, 1984), and advanced degrees in Taxation (LLM, NYU School of Law, 1988) and Collective Bargaining (Cornell University, 1980). His research explores AI and technology in negotiation/mediation, Chinese SOE reforms, and aging workforce legal issues. He has published over 30 articles and a book on ADR in workplaces.
Professional roles include arbitrator on federal/state panels (FMCS, AAA), former labor attorney, and EEOC mediation evaluator. His honors include the National Academy of Arbitrators writing award ($3,000 prize) and Fulbright recognitions. Grants include EEOC-funded ODR studies. He frequently speaks at conferences like ABA Dispute Resolution and the NYC Triad event on labor relations.
