Carolyn Eichner is a Professor with joint appointments in History and Women's & Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her research examines gender, empire, and feminist movements in 19th-century France, with particular emphasis on women's roles in the Paris Commune and colonial New Caledonia. She holds a PhD from UCLA and teaches courses on European women's history, French history, and U.S. feminisms.
Recent publications include award-winning monographs exploring feminist anti-imperialism and women's revolutionary agency. Research consistently centers marginalized voices in imperial systems, with current work analyzing deportation narratives and naming politics. Fellowships include Fulbright (France) and Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study.
Eichner serves on editorial boards for French Historical Studies and Women and Social Movements in Modern Empires, and has held leadership roles in the Western Society for French History and International Federation for Research in Women's & Gender History.
