Carolyn Drake serves as a Visiting Critic in the Department of Art at Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) for summer and fall 2025. An acclaimed visual artist, her work interrogates historical narratives through long-term photo-based projects that creatively reimagine dominant accounts.
Her research integrates Photography, Mixed Media Art, and Narrative Theory, challenging binaries between author/subject and real/imaginary. Drake's practice collaboratively merges photography with sewing, collage, and sculpture to deconstruct entrenched power structures in visual storytelling.
Drake has received multiple honors:
- Guggenheim Fellowship
- Henri Cartier Bresson Award
- Peter S. Reed Foundation grant
- Lange Taylor Prize
- Fulbright fellowship
Represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery and Magnum Photos, her artistic contributions bridge documentary traditions with experimental fabrication, influencing contemporary discourse on visual narrative ethics.
