Professor Caroline Mitchell is a Professor of Radio and Participation at the University of Sunderland, specializing in community media production and transnational radio cultures. Her work emphasizes participatory action research, with a focus on women’s radio histories, feminist praxis, and sustainable media frameworks. She co-founded the UK’s first women’s radio station, Fem FM (1992), and co-curated its digital archive in 2014. Her research includes the Transnational Radio Encounters project, which led to the creation of the Radio Garden platform (2016), and explores how media practices address UN Sustainability Goals. Mitchell teaches radio management, community media theory, and transnational radio practices at undergraduate and MA levels. She actively contributes to academic networks like the Radio Studies Network and WREN (Women's Radio in Europe Network). Her current research prioritizes participatory media’s role in cultural participation, wellbeing, and global sustainability.
Her research spans projects funded by HERA, EU Grundtvig, and others, addressing topics like community radio’s role in social justice and intergenerational media engagement. Mitchell advises organizations such as the COMandalucia research group and the Community Media Association. She has been featured in university news for her innovative teaching and media projects, including the Rebel Women of Sunderland podcast and student radio achievements. Her work bridges academic inquiry with practical media initiatives, fostering inclusive and impactful cultural participation.
