Dr. Caroline McDonald-Harker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Mount Royal University, where she also serves as Director of the Centre for Community Disaster Research (CCDR). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, an M.A. from McGill University, and a B.A. from Queen’s University. Her research focuses on disaster sociology, family dynamics, trauma and resilience, mental health, gender, domestic violence, and mixed-methods research approaches.
Dr. McDonald-Harker has secured over $1.9 million in external research grants since 2014. Notable collaborations include the Alberta Resilient Communities Research Project ($1,059,716) and the Pediatric Resiliency study post-Fort McMurray wildfire ($500,000). Her work addresses community recovery, environmental crises, and resilience-building among children/youth affected by disasters.
Her scientific awards include the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. Media engagement includes regular CBC/CTV interviews on sociological issues related to disasters and family trauma. Courses taught span introductory sociology, gender studies, family sociology, qualitative methods, and honors research supervision.
Labs and teams: She leads the CCDR, actively collaborating with institutions like the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. Her grant projects emphasize interdisciplinary partnerships to address vulnerable populations in disaster settings.
