Tara McGee, PhD, is a Professor in the Faculty of Science's Earth & Atmospheric Sciences department and serves as Associate Dean (Access, Community and Belonging) in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Alberta. She holds dual roles in academic leadership and research, focusing on wildfire social sciences and Indigenous community resilience. Her expertise spans wildfire prevention, evacuation protocols, and qualitative research methods.
McGee earned her PhD from The Australian National University (1996) and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Co-op) from the University of Waterloo (1989). Her research emphasizes human responses to environmental hazards, particularly in Indigenous communities, including the First Nations Wildfire Evacuation Partnership she co-leads.
Her research explores wildfire mitigation strategies, evacuation challenges, and cultural adaptation to disasters. Recent work highlights Indigenous knowledge integration in emergency management and host community preparedness. She teaches HGEO 252: Human Dimensions of Environmental Hazards, covering vulnerability, resilience, and risk communication.
McGee’s publications analyze wildfire smoke management, gender roles in disaster recovery, and flood resilience in subarctic regions. She leads the Human Dimensions of Hazards Research Group, fostering collaborative projects on hazards like earthquakes, avalanches, and landslides. She actively mentors undergraduate researchers and advocates for equitable disaster policies.
