Dr. Caroline M. Eakin is a Senior Lecturer and Fellow at the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), Australian National University (ANU). She holds a PhD from Yale University and an MSci in Geophysics from Imperial College London. Her research focuses on observational seismology and geodynamics, particularly using seismic anisotropy to study mantle flow and tectonic processes. She has conducted fieldwork in Australia, Antarctica, and South America, deploying seismic networks like the WA-Array and Macquarie Ridge OBS projects. Her teaching contributions include the EMSC1008 Earth course and supervising numerous graduate students. Notable awards include the EGU Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award (2022) and the Bear McPhail Teaching Award (2020). Dr. Eakin leads funded projects such as the Accelerating Exploration of Renewable Natural Hydrogen (CRC-P) and Investigating Seismic Anisotropy beneath the WA-Array. She actively contributes to curriculum development and serves on the RSES Education Committee.
- Education: PhD (Yale, 2014), MSci (Imperial College, 2010)
- Key Projects: WA-Array, Macquarie Ridge 3D imaging, Eyre Peninsula Nodal Array (EPNA)
- Teaching: Courses in geophysics, mentorship in honors and MPhil programs
Her research spans mantle dynamics, subduction zones, and continental interiors, with recent work on Australian lithospheric structure and sediment thickness. She has supervised over 15 students, many progressing to postdoctoral roles or industry positions.
