Caroline Lillian Schopp

Caroline Lillian Schopp is an Assistant Professor in the Department of the History of Art at Johns Hopkins University, part of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. Her research critically examines gendered, Eurocentric, and institutional assumptions in European art historiography, focusing on performance art, textile arts, public sculpture, and the critique of violence. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago, an MA in Cultural Theory from Humboldt University Berlin, and a BA in Art History and German from Harvard University.

Her first book, *In-action: Viennese Actionism and the Passivities of Performance Art* (University of Chicago Press, 2025), rethinks Viennese performance art through queer and feminist frameworks. Current projects include a study on feminist responses to Duchamp and Picasso, and a book on concrete poetry's intersections with body and language. She has held positions at the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Vienna, and her work is supported by grants from the Getty/ACLS, DAAD, and others.

Teaching and research interests emphasize critical theory, modern and contemporary art, and transatlantic intellectual exchange. She is on leave for the 2024-25 academic year.
