Beth Hinderliter is an Associate Professor of Art History and Director of Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art at James Madison University. She holds a Ph.D. (Art History) from Columbia University, as well as degrees from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and UNC Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on modern/contemporary art, Africana studies, feminist theory, and postcolonial aesthetics. She has authored/co-edited works such as *Communities of Sense: Rethinking Aesthetics and Politics* and contributed to journals like *Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art* and *Theory & Event*. Hinderliter’s awards include the E.O. Smith Faculty Development Award (2017) and the Wolfsonian Research Fellowship (2015). She has curated exhibitions and advised on interdisciplinary projects, emphasizing diversity and equity in academia.
Her scholarly work spans global art dialogues, including studies of Dak’Art Biennale curatorial practices and Cold War-era Black internationalism. Recent publications explore performance art in Finland, postcolonial film aesthetics, and Viennese Actionism. Hinderliter’s research often bridges theory and practice, examining how art confronts socio-political issues like racial capitalism and global inequity.
