Caroline Fall

Professor Caroline Fall is a faculty member at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine, holding the title of Professor of International Paediatric Epidemiology. She is a paediatrician and epidemiologist with expertise in the developmental origins of health and disease, focusing on how maternal diet and nutrition affect children's long-term health in developing populations, particularly India.

Her research investigates the fetal origins of cardiometabolic diseases, including epigenetic mechanisms and maternal nutritional interventions. She leads major consortia such as TALENT and EMPHASIS, collaborating across India, sub-Saharan Africa, and LMICs globally. Her work has established links between maternal undernutrition, low birthweight, and increased risks of diabetes/hypertension, while also demonstrating the impact of improved maternal nutrition on reducing low birthweight.

Key scientific awards include the David Barker Medal (2013) and the March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Award (2019). She contributes to global health initiatives like HeLTI and INPreP, and serves on advisory panels for CLOSER International, NIHR, and the International DOHaD Society.
