Caroline Bainbridge is a Professor of Psychoanalysis and Culture at the University of Roehampton's Department of Media, Culture and Language. She directs the Media and the Inner World research network (AHRC-funded 2009-2013) and serves as Film Section Editor for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. Her work bridges psychoanalytic theory with cultural studies, focusing on film, television, gender politics, and emotional dynamics in media.
Education includes a BA from the University of Cambridge (1992), MA in Psychoanalytic Studies (Sheffield, 1994), PhD on Luce Irigaray and film (Sheffield, 1997), and later studies in organizational psychoanalysis (Tavistock, 2014). She holds prestigious fellowships from the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the Higher Education Academy.
Research interests center on psychoanalysis' intersection with media culture, including themes like gender representation, cinematic trauma, and the emotional turn in popular culture. Recent work explores binge-watching psychology, celebrity culture's therapeutic dynamics, and the girl-gang film genre.
She has supervised over 10 PhD students on topics ranging from feminist film theory to media psychology. Awards include the Susana Wesley Prize (2015) and Principal Fellowship of the HEA (2016). Professional roles include editorial leadership in Free Associations journal and Routledge's Psychoanalysis and Popular Culture series.
Labs/teams: Co-leads the Media and Inner World network with Candida Yates. Consultancy work involves applying psychoanalytic approaches to organizational dynamics and cultural analysis.
