Karen Cross is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow affiliated with the Centre for Research in Arts and Creative Exchange, part of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Her work bridges digital culture, media studies, and psychoanalysis, focusing on transformative education and ethical technological innovation. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from the University of East London and an MSc in Social Research Methods from the Open University. Her leadership roles include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and training in strategic educational leadership. Cross established Healing Media to reimagine media’s role in fostering holistic societal futures.
Her research explores digital culture’s impact on identity, community, and labor, with notable works like Toy Story and the Inner World of the Child (2022). She has advised doctoral students on topics ranging from media screens and activism to pandemic gaming. Awards include Royal Society for the Arts Fellowship (2022) and Founding Scholar status with the British Psychoanalytic Council (2019).
Recent projects include the ‘Visioning the Future of the City Together’ initiative, applying organizational psychology to enhance urban planning participation. Cross’s peer review contributions span prestigious journals like Free Associations and publishers such as Polity and Palgrave Macmillan.
