Dr. Carolin Mezes is a PostDoc Fellow at the Joint Institute for Individualization in a Changing Environment (InChangE) at the University of Bielefeld since October 2023, working within the interdisciplinary research network at AG Lengersdorf, Gender Sociology. She earned her doctorate in July 2023 with a thesis titled "Monitoring Pandemic Preparedness. On Global Health Security's Politics of Accountability, Development and Infrastructure," published as a monograph by campus Verlag. Previously, from February 2018 to 2023, she served as a Research Associate at the Collaborative Research Center (CRC/TRR) 138 "Dynamics of Security," specifically on subproject A08 — Managing Transnational Health Crises.
Her academic credentials include an MA in Sociology from Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (2018) and an MA in Gender, Media & Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London (2016). Dr. Mezes' research spans Biopolitics, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology of the Material, Sociology of Medicine and Psychological Disciplines, and Feminist theories including body theory and affect theories.
Her current research focuses on the project "Psychosomatics 2.0? Scientific Sociological Mapping of Psychosomatic Medicine in Germany," representing the first systematic sociological study of psychosomatic medicine in Germany. This work examines how this field attempts to transcend classical modern dualisms (psyche/soma, body/mind, nature/culture) through institutional, conceptual, and treatment practices, particularly in light of developments in neuroscience.
Dr. Mezes' scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with global health security frameworks, pandemic preparedness, and the sociological dimensions of diagnostic uncertainty. Her publications reflect an interdisciplinary approach that bridges medical sociology, security studies, and gender theory, with particular attention to how health security intersects with social dynamics and institutional responses to health crises.

Her work contributes significantly to Bielefeld University's strategic research area on "The Changing World," examining complex processes of individual and societal dynamics under conditions of uncertainty. Through her research on health security and psychosomatic medicine, Dr. Mezes exemplifies Bielefeld's principle of "Transcending Boundaries" by bridging disciplinary divides between sociology, medical humanities, security studies, and health policy.
