Dr. Carolin Ehlke is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the Institute for Social and Organizational Pedagogy at the University of Hildesheim, Department of Education and Social Sciences. She has been working at the institute since 2019, focusing on historical youth welfare research with particular emphasis on care leavers' transitions to adulthood and comparative studies of youth welfare systems in the GDR and FRG.
Her educational background includes a Doctorate in Philosophy (Dr. phil.) from the University of Hildesheim (2019) with a dissertation on foster care leavers' transitions to independent living, a Master of Arts in Education from the same institution, and a two-month research stay at the University of Victoria's School of Child and Youth Care funded by the Didrik-Pining-Stipendium.
Dr. Ehlke's research interests span historical youth welfare systems, care leaver transitions, foster care systems, power dynamics in social work, and qualitative research methods. Her work demonstrates a strong focus on the lived experiences of care leavers and the structural conditions affecting their transitions to adulthood, with increasing attention to historical comparative perspectives between East and West German youth welfare systems.
Her recent publications (2020-2024) reveal a consistent trajectory examining care leaver transitions from multiple angles - personal relationships, institutional support structures, educational processes in residential care, and historical contexts. The research demonstrates methodological diversity combining qualitative approaches with historical analysis, showing particular strength in examining the intersection of personal biography and institutional frameworks in youth welfare contexts.
