Carolien Stolte

Carolien Stolte is an Associate Professor of History at the Institute for History (Leiden University). Her research focuses on modern global history with regional expertise in South Asia, intersecting themes of Cold War colonialism, decolonization, slavery, intellectual history, pacifism, and Afro-Asian movements.

Research Interests: Stolte’s work explores the entanglement of Cold War dynamics with colonial legacies, anti-imperial intellectual networks like the League Against Imperialism, and transnational peace movements. Her recent research emphasizes global history methodologies and the role of South-South interactions in decolonization.

Scientific Awards:

• KNAW Early Career Award (2019).

Publications include analyses of Cold War Afro-Asianism, the League Against Imperialism, and contemporary Indian politics. Her 2024 work examines Hindu nationalism in Indian elections.

Advising: Supervises five PhD candidates, including Amza Adam, Maha Ali, and Pratika Dewi, focusing on global history and postcolonial studies.
