Carole J. Lee is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington, with additional roles as Adjunct Professor at the Information School (iSchool) and Affiliate Faculty at multiple interdisciplinary centers, including the Center for an Informed Public, Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences, eScience Institute, Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, and Society + Technology Program. Her research explores the social structure of science, integrating normative and descriptive analyses of biases and norms in peer review and scientific credit allocation.
Lee's empirical work includes studies on racial disparities in NIH grant reviews, gender disparities in Doris Duke Charitable Foundation funding, and gender homophily in co-authorship across JSTOR. Her scholarship appears in interdisciplinary venues like Science, The Lancet, and Philosophy of Science, and has been recognized by media outlets such as the Chronicle of Higher Education and STAT.
She directs Rapid Science and has served on advisory boards for the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines and ASAPbio. Her awards include the NIH Peer Review Challenge First Prize and the Philosophy of Science Association's Prize in Philosophy of Science & Race.
