Carole Blackburn is an Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of British Columbia, within the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on Legal and Political Anthropology, Indigenous Rights and Sovereignty, Settler Colonialism, and Human Rights, with particular emphasis on First Nations communities and their relationship with the Canadian state.
Her work critically examines the implementation of treaties and UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) in British Columbia, analyzing how legal frameworks address historical trauma, injury, and reconciliation. She has previously conducted SSHRC-funded research on residential school litigation, exploring the political dimensions of trauma as evidence.
Scientific Awards:
- Shortlisted for the Raymond Klibansky Book Prize (Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada) for her book Harvest of Souls (2000).
