Sheryl Lightfoot is Professor of Political Science at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. She serves as the North American member and past chair of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP). An Anishinaabe from the Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe, Dr. Lightfoot is a leading scholar on Indigenous global politics and rights implementation across multiple jurisdictions.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Political Science from the University of Minnesota (2009). Prior to her current position at the University of Toronto, she held the Canada Research Chair in Global Indigenous Rights and Politics and served as Associate Professor in Political Science, Public Policy and Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Lightfoot's research focuses on Indigenous global politics, particularly the implementation of Indigenous rights in global, national, and regional contexts. Her work examines how international human rights frameworks, especially the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), can be effectively translated into domestic legislation and policy. She has been instrumental in analyzing how Indigenous sovereignty, land rights, and self-determination intersect with state governance structures, with particular attention to Canadian contexts but with global relevance.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the practical implementation of UNDRIP across different levels of government. Her scholarship reveals how Indigenous rights frameworks are transforming traditional state-Indigenous relations, particularly regarding land governance, legislative reform, and reconciliation processes.
