Carol Southall is the Head of Department for Business at Staffordshire University's School of Digital, Tech, Innovation & Business. She is currently completing a PhD at the University of Wolverhampton on cultural awareness and visitor satisfaction in tourism. With over 25 years in the tourism industry as a tour guide, resort representative, and hospitality professional, she brings extensive operational experience to her academic role.
Academic qualifications include a PhD (in progress), MA Tourism Management (University of Wolverhampton), and HND Tourism Management (University of West London). She has taught courses in Tourism Management, Event Management, and Visitor Attraction Management.
Research focuses on LGBT tourism, family tourism, cultural awareness, and eSport events. Notable projects include the Smartour Erasmus+ project for sustainable tourism and an environmental impact assessment for Lichfield Cathedral. She collaborates with industry partners like Alton Towers and Dorothy Clive Garden to enhance student employability.
Professional memberships include the Tourism Management Institute, Association for Event Management Education, and Association for Tourism in Higher Education. Her work has been recognized through Staffordshire University's Whatuni Student Choice Awards for Facilities and Social Inclusion (2023) and its 'Outstanding' research impact rating in the Times Higher Education Guide.
Her advising and grants activities include leading institutional research initiatives and curriculum development. She is part of the Senior Advisory Board for Harrington Park Press and actively contributes to tourism policy discussions through publications and conference presentations.
