Carol Shaben (she/her) is an award-winning author, journalist, and instructor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Creative Writing. She holds a BA from the University of Alberta and an MFA from UBC. Her work focuses on literary journalism, narrative structure, and amplifying underrepresented voices through experimental nonfiction forms.

Her research interests include crafting inspirational and underdog narratives, diversity in storytelling, and innovative approaches to lyric forms in nonfiction. Her writing has been featured internationally and adapted for film.

- Ontario Historical Society Huguenot Award (2016)
As a former CBC Radio journalist and longtime Faculty Editor at the Banff Centre’s Literary Journalism Program, she has mentored emerging writers and contributed to major literary initiatives. She has taught creative nonfiction at UBC and continues to advocate for narrative-driven storytelling across media platforms.
Her collaborative work with Mohamed Fahmy on The Marriott Cell highlights her commitment to global human rights reporting and cross-cultural storytelling.
