Dr. Carol Plautz is a Professor of Biology at Shepherd University, where she has taught full-time since 2008. Her roles include teaching courses ranging from general biology to advanced topics, mentoring undergraduate research, and community engagement. She emphasizes hands-on research mentorship, inspired by her own undergraduate experience at New College of Florida under Dr. John Morrill. Her service includes editorial leadership as associate editor and section editor for the Proceedings of the West Virginia Academy of Science, transitioning it to an online journal. She also volunteers with Seeding Your Future (STEM outreach), the Independent Fire Company (bingo calls), and Meals With Love (food deliveries). Dr. Plautz holds board positions with the Shepherd University Foundation and the Old Opera House Theater Company in Charles Town.
Her research focuses on ecological and biological inquiry, with a strong emphasis on fostering student independence and resilience in scientific exploration. She actively integrates community service into her professional life, bridging academic and civic roles.
