معرفی
Professor Carol Munro is a leading researcher at the University of Aberdeen, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She heads the Microbiology & Immunity Research Theme, which encompasses Immunology, Immunotherapeutics, and Microbial Pathogenesis. Her work focuses on fungal pathogens, particularly Candida albicans, Candida auris, and Aspergillus fumigatus, investigating cell wall dynamics and antifungal resistance mechanisms.
- Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Brigid Biologics, developing antifungal therapeutics
- Leader of EU-funded HDM-Fun (2020-2024) and FunHoMic (2019-2023) projects
- Developed human ex vivo skin models, gut organoids, and BSL3 labs for SARS-CoV-2 research
Her research integrates cell wall proteomics, live-cell imaging, and functional genomics to uncover fungal:host interaction mechanisms. Recent publications highlight advancements in VHH nanobodies, drug-induced tolerance studies, and comparative genomic analyses of pathogenic fungi.
- Leverhulme Trust/Royal Society Senior Research Fellowship (2019-2020)
- Wellcome Trust Biomedical Resources Grant (2009-2013) for the Candida albicans ORFeome project
- BBSRC Case Studentship (2011-2015) for bacterial-skin infection models
Carol mentors PhD students Ed Devlin, Mark Mawer, and Mark Peacock, fostering innovations in antifungal antibody development and biofilm research. Her collaborations span institutions like Pasteur Institute, University of Kent, and Scottish Biologics Facility.
