Dr. Carol Mackersie is a faculty member at San Diego State University (SDSU) in the College of Health and Human Services. She joined the faculty in 1996 after a decade of clinical work as an audiologist and has since contributed extensively to audiology research and education. Her teaching included courses on hearing amplification, psychoacoustics, and research methodology, with a focus on the clinician-scientist model of audiology education that integrates clinical practice with research rigor.
Research Interests: Dr. Mackersie's work centers on perceptual consequences of acquired hearing loss, hearing-related stress indices, and factors affecting hearing amplification success. She has pioneered studies on self-fitting hearing aids, autonomic nervous system reactivity, and cognitive energy expenditure in hearing-impaired individuals, often incorporating human factors and biometric feedback into device optimization.
Scientific Awards:
- 2021 SDSU Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award
Publications: Her scholarship spans hearing aid self-adjustment, noise suppression systems, and physiological responses to auditory demand. Trends include leveraging user experience metrics and biomedical engineering to improve hearing rehabilitation outcomes.
Legacy: Dr. Mackersie has mentored over two dozen doctoral research projects and co-developed the Joint SDSU/UCSD Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program, which she co-directed until 2021. Her research has been supported by the National Institute of Health and private foundations.
