Carol Lynne Symes is a University Scholar and Professor of History at the University of Illinois, with affiliations in Classics, Theatre, and interdisciplinary programs like the Program in Medieval Studies, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and Global Studies. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a B.A. from Yale College, and an M.Litt. from Oxford University, alongside professional theatre training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Her research explores premodern documentary cultures, medieval media, and the interplay between performance and text. Notable works include A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007), which redefined medieval media studies, and her co-edited volume Cities, Texts and Social Networks, 400-1500 (2010). She founded The Medieval Globe, a journal promoting global premodern studies, and co-authored Western Civilizations, a widely used textbook. Recent projects include A Cultural History of Media in the Middle Ages and studies on modern war’s impact on medieval heritage.
Recipient of major awards like the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize and Dean's Professorial Scholar title, Symes is also a dedicated educator, honored with the Queen Teaching Prize. She advises numerous Ph.D. students and supports faculty grants through the Office of Research & Project Development. Her stageworthy translations of medieval plays, such as The Play of Adam, bridge academic and performative scholarship.
