Holger Schott Syme is an Associate Professor of English and Drama at the University of Toronto Mississauga, cross-appointed to the Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies. He specializes in theatre history, focusing on early modern England and contemporary European theatre, particularly in Germany.
- Education: PhD and AM from Harvard University, BA (First Class) from Oxford University.
His research explores the intersections of theatre history, performance studies, and early modern print culture. Current projects include a study of Shakespeare in Berlin, a history of 20th-century European ensemble theatre, and a revisionist account of early modern theatrical institutions.
He has received multiple grants and awards, including SSHRC Insight Development Grant and Chancellor Jackman Program for the Arts Grant. Syme also engages in theatre direction, with recent productions of Twelfth Night and Casimir and Caroline, and is an active critic and blogger on early modern and contemporary performance.
