Carol Livermore is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Operations in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University, with an affiliation in Electrical and Computer Engineering. She holds a PhD in Physics from Harvard University (1998), an MA in Physics from Harvard (1995), and a BS in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1993). Her research focuses on MEMS-enabled actuators, origami-based microfluidic systems, and carbon nanomaterials for tissue engineering and energy applications.
Research Highlights: Dr. Livermore’s lab develops biomimetic organs-on-a-chip using origami manufacturing strategies, lightweight carbon nanomaterials for aerospace applications, and compact actuators for assistive technologies. Her work has led to innovations like the ApreX Biotech spinoff and patented microvalve technologies. Notable awards include the 2021 Søren Buus Outstanding Research Award and 2007 NSF CAREER Award.
Leadership & Service: She serves as Assistant Chair for Operations in MIE and is active in professional societies like the American Society for Engineering Education and IEEE. Her teaching spans solid mechanics, MEMS design, and senior capstone projects. Recent publications (2017–2024) emphasize microfluidic systems, nanomaterials, and MEMS applications across biomedical and energy domains.
