Matthew J. Eckelman is Professor and Associate Chair for Faculty in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University's College of Engineering, with dual directorship of the Master of Public Policy Program and MS in Engineering and Public Policy under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. He maintains cross-college affiliations in Chemical Engineering, Marine and Environmental Sciences, School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, and The Plastics Center.
His educational foundation includes a PhD (2009) and M.S./M.Phil. (2006) in Environmental Engineering from Yale University, and a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Amherst College (2000).
Eckelman's research integrates engineering and policy through life cycle assessment, sustainable production systems, energy modeling, and climate-health intersections. His work pioneers methodologies for quantifying environmental impacts across healthcare, industrial, and urban systems while developing practical green design frameworks for decarbonization.
Recent publications reveal converging trends in sustainable infrastructure, emphasizing healthcare resilience under climate change, industrial solar transition feasibility, and dynamic building performance modeling. These span public health, renewable energy engineering, and sustainable construction disciplines with cross-cutting subfields including life cycle assessment, emissions accounting, and techno-economic optimization.
His scientific recognition includes the 2025 Søren Buus Outstanding Research Award, 2022 Stanford Top 2% Scientists distinction, 2015 NSF CAREER Award, and 2013 ISIE Laudise Young Researcher Prize.
