Peter J. Hesketh is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) since Spring 2000. He holds appointments in Micro and Nano Engineering Education and has affiliations with the Electrochemical Society and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His research focuses on MEMS/NEMS, sensors, microfabrication, and biomedical sensors, emphasizing miniaturization and energy efficiency.
Education: Ph.D. (1987), M.S. (1983) from the University of Pennsylvania; B.Sc. (1979) from the University of Leeds, UK.
Research interests include micro/nanofabrication techniques, sensors for chemical and biological applications, microfluidics, and magnetic actuators. Notable projects include miniature gas chromatography systems, microcantilever sensors, and magnetic bead-based biosensing. His work integrates photolithography, MEMS actuation, and low-power instrumentation.
Awards include the Satish Dhwan Visiting Chair Professorship (2019), multiple teaching accolades, and fellowships from the Electrochemical Society and AAAS. He has authored over 60 papers and edited 15 books on microsensor systems.
Key contributions: 15+ patents (e.g., electromagnetic microvalves, porous gas sensors), leadership roles in academic societies, and collaborations with institutions like the CDC. His research bridges mechanical engineering, nanotechnology, and biomedical applications.
