Carol Jantsch serves as an Adjunct Professor of Tuba in the Instrumental Studies department at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance, while also holding a faculty position at Yale University's School of Music. As principal tuba of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 2006—the first woman to hold such a position in a major American orchestra—she maintains an active international career as a soloist and educator.
Her academic foundation includes graduating salutatorian from Interlochen Arts Academy and earning a Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Michigan under Fritz Kaenzig.
Jantsch's professional work centers on expanding the tuba's artistic boundaries through solo performance, commissioning new repertoire, and innovative educational outreach. She has premiered major concertos by Grammy-winning composer Michael Daugherty and Pulitzer Prize-winning Wynton Marsalis, significantly advancing contemporary tuba literature while bridging classical tradition with modern musical expressions.
Her recognition includes the prestigious Yamaha Performing Artist designation.
In educational leadership, Jantsch founded Tubas for Good (2018), providing instruments to Philadelphia public school students, and coaches through The Philadelphia Orchestra's All City Fellowship. She annually hosts the Tuba/Euphonium PlayIN at Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall, creating inclusive performance opportunities for musicians of all ages and skill levels.
She co-founded the tuba cover band Tubular as chief arranger, transforming pop and rock repertoire for low brass, and launched the Rising Stars Podcast during the pandemic to amplify underrepresented brass musicians' voices while addressing critical industry issues including diversity, mental health, and professional development.
