Dr. Carol Schuurmans is a Senior Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute and a full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor (2001) and Professor (2014) at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary.
- Education: BSc/MSc in Microbiology (University of Alberta), PhD in Medical Genetics (University of Toronto)
Research Interests: The lab focuses on neural cell fate specification and tissue morphogenesis in the developing central nervous system, particularly the retina and neocortex. Key areas include:
- Role of proneural transcription factors (Neurog1, Neurog2, Ascl1)
- Function of zinc finger transcription factors (Zac1, Plag1, Plag-l2)
- Signaling pathways (ERK, Pten) regulating neurogenesis
- Application of developmental insights to neural repair and lineage conversion therapies
Scientific Awards:
- Dixon Family Chair in Ophthalmology Research
Teaching: Courses taught include Advances in Epigenetics, Research Project in Biochemistry, and Advanced Research Project in Biochemistry.
Lab Members: Current team includes research associates, postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and a research technician working on neural development and repair projects.
