Carol Hodgson is a Professor (Research) at Monash University, serving as Executive Director of Monash Partners Academic Health Science Centre, Head of the Division of Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Deputy Director of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre. She is an honorary Specialist Physiotherapist at The Alfred Hospital and holds NHMRC funding, including an L2 Investigator Grant (2025-2029). Her research focuses on rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, ECMO, and long-term outcomes of critically ill patients.
Key collaborations include leadership in projects like the Australian and New Zealand ICU Workforce Survey and the RECOMMEND Platform Trial for ECMO efficacy. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and the Australian College of Physiotherapists, reflecting her expertise and contributions to critical care medicine.
Research interests emphasize early mobilization in intensive care, mechanical ventilation strategies, and improving outcomes for ECMO patients. Recent studies highlight functional recovery post-ICU and pandemic-related challenges in ECMO care. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health systems and quality of life.
