Lisa Higgins is a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC), Monash University, within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She leads the Health Economics Program and holds an honorary Senior Research Fellow position at The George Institute for Global Health. She is an NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellow and actively contributes to major national and international clinical trial initiatives.

Lisa's research is centered on health economics in critical care, with a focus on long-term patient outcomes, cost-effectiveness of ICU interventions, and economic evaluations embedded within randomized clinical trials. She has extensive expertise in adaptive platform trials, having led the health economics and long-term outcomes components of the global REMAP-CAP trial during the pandemic. Her work informs clinical and policy decisions in intensive care globally.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in evaluating complex critical care interventions through rigorous trial-based economic analyses. Topics include early mobilisation safety, blood transfusion practices, pharmacological treatments for COVID-19, mechanical circulatory support, and sepsis management. These works span high-impact journals and reflect a multidisciplinary approach integrating clinical outcomes with economic evaluation.

Lisa has secured over $60 million in competitive grant funding and has served on the management committees of 23 large-scale international randomized controlled trials funded by NHMRC and MRFF. She is the Primary Chief Investigator on several active projects, including ECMO PROMPT, and a Chief Investigator on major trials like RECOMMEND and ATTACC-CAP. She mentors early-career researchers and is accepting PhD students through Monash University’s Supervisor Connect program.
Lisa is a key member of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA) Health Economics Alongside Trials (HEAT) Group, which she co-chairs, and contributes to national strategy through involvement with Research Australia and the Australian Health Economics Society. Her collaborative network spans institutions across Australia, New Zealand, North America, and the UK, particularly through her leadership in multinational critical care trials.
