Carol Higham is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). She is affiliated with the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS) and serves as co-coordinator for the History Transfer Learning Community, a departmental advisor, and coordinator for the CEEC/CTEC programs. Her research interests include comparative history, Native American history, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century racial ideas. She holds a Ph.D. from Duke University (1993), an M.A. from Yale University (1988), and a B.A. from Wellesley College (1987).
Dr. Higham has authored and co-authored multiple books and articles, including The Frontier Transformed: The Civil War in the West (2013) and co-edited volumes such as Conquests and Consequences: From Frontier to Region (2009). Her work often explores transnational and comparative perspectives on colonialism, race, and religious missions. She has been recognized with teaching excellence awards, including being a finalist for the UNC Charlotte Award for Teaching Excellence in 2022.
Her courses span topics like American frontier history, the Civil War in the West, and race and religion in the nineteenth century. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives and has held leadership roles in academic programs.
