Steve Sabol is a Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), affiliated with the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS). His Honors Faculty term extends until June 2028. He holds a Ph.D. from Georgia State University (1998) and specializes in comparative colonialism, Russian and Central Asian history, and the First World War's socio-political impacts.
Research focuses on Indigenous responses to internal colonization in the U.S., Russia, and Sweden (19th–20th centuries), particularly through comparative studies of Native American and Sámi political movements. Awards include the 2013 Arrell M. Gibson Award for his essay on Sioux and Kazakh experiences. He teaches courses on Russian history, Central Asia, the Viking Age, and global colonialism.
Current projects examine the Society of American Indians and Sámi Landsmöte (1905–1925), extending his book The Touch of Civilization. His work bridges transnational Indigenous activism with imperial policies, emphasizing comparative methodologies.
