She holds affiliations with the University of Johannesburg and the Center for Education Rights and Transformation. Her research focuses on globalization’s impact on education systems, teacher agency in neoliberal contexts, and equity-driven approaches to educational quality beyond standardized testing. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, and India, analyzing teacher migration, privatization resistance, and participatory research methodologies.
Dr. Spreen earned her Ph.D. in Comparative and International Education from Columbia University, alongside advanced degrees from Teachers College and the University of Illinois. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on comparative education, globalization’s educational implications, and human rights in education. She has secured over $1 million in grants for international research and community engagement, and serves on advisory boards for organizations like Education International and the World Bank.
Research highlights include two book projects: one on African rural schoolteachers’ realities and another on global teacher resistance to educational privatization. Her work critiques corporate influence in education, particularly through multinational edu-businesses, and advocates for rights-based frameworks in policy-making. Recent publications address labor unions’ roles in resisting IMF education policies and post-capitalist educational praxis through 'third spaces' of learning.
Award-winning educator with a focus on socially engaged research, Spreen has collaborated with UNESCO, Brookings Institution, and South African educational ministries. Her career spans faculty roles at NYU, UVA, University of Maryland, and visiting positions at Wits University and Stanford. She remains committed to bridging academic research with grassroots movements for educational justice.
