Associate Professor Carmen Parter is a Cultural Lead and Researcher at the Djurali Group for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research and Education. A proud Murri woman of Darumbai and Jura clans from the Birra Gubba Nation with South Sea Islander heritage from Tanna Island, Vanuatu, she was born in Bowen, Queensland.
Her professional background spans clinical practice and policy development, having served as a registered nurse, midwife, and Aboriginal Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner in community settings before transitioning to government roles shaping child protection, law, justice, and health policies at state and national levels.
Her research focuses on:
- Indigenous health equity and culturally safe care models
- Cardiovascular disease management in Aboriginal populations
- Vocational education pathways in health
- Policy frameworks for Aboriginal health systems
Current initiatives include projects on vocational education and early detection of atrial fibrillation in Aboriginal communities, emphasizing community-led solutions and health system reform.
