University of Naples 'L'Orientale'معرفی
Carmela Maria Laudando is a full Professor of English Literature at Università degli Studi di Napoli 'L' Orientale', where she serves as University Research Delegate since November 2024. Previously, she directed the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies (2020-2023), chaired two Teaching Area Committees, and served on the Academic Senate for two terms. She coordinates university orientation programs and serves on the PhD Committee in Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies, as well as the Editorial Board of the international journal Anglistica – Aion. An Interdisciplinary Journal.
Her research spans eighteenth-century English literature and culture (with monographs on Laurence Sterne and Virginia Woolf's Between the Acts), Shakespeare studies, women's writing, cultural and postcolonial studies, and Anglo-Indian fiction. She has edited volumes exploring connections between literature, visual arts, media, and performance studies. Her recent work examines William Kentridge's adaptations of Hogarth's 'Industry and Idleness,' Sterne's 'nose' novella, and comparative analyses of Anita Desai's The Artist of Disappearance with Virginia Woolf's 'Solid Objects,' alongside posthuman interpretations of Swift's 'Tale.'
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent trajectory connecting visual arts with literary analysis, particularly focusing on how contemporary artists reinterpret historical literary works. Her scholarship demonstrates how eighteenth-century literary techniques continue to influence modern and postmodern artistic expression, with special attention to intertextual relationships across centuries and media forms.
Laudando has led significant research initiatives, serving as PI for the Naples Local Unit of two PRIN projects (2003, 1999) and directing two strategic departmental research projects (2019-2021, 2022-2024). She has organized numerous international conferences including 'Sterne and the Grand Tour' (2021), 'Performing Narrative in the Age of Transmedia Networks' (2017), and 'Reti performative' (2015).
Currently teaching 'English Literature II,' 'World Literatures in English I,' and interdisciplinary seminars on contemporary English literature, her course schedule extends through the 2025-2026 academic year with classes planned through May 2026.
