Carlo Vannini is a Professor of Photography for Cultural Heritage at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, where he teaches characterizing courses in the Restoration department for Stone, Wooden, and Library/Archival materials programs. His work bridges academic instruction with high-profile cultural heritage documentation projects across Italy's most significant institutions.
His research focuses on Cultural Heritage Photography and Gigapixel Imaging techniques for precise art documentation. He specializes in 1:1 scale digital reconstruction of masterpieces using advanced color management systems (LAB*), monitor calibration, and specialized stitching software. His methodology combines analog photography principles with cutting-edge digital workflows for museum-grade archival results.
Vannini has executed major Vatican Museums projects including the Sistine Chapel (2015-2016) and Raphael Rooms (2022), plus campaigns for Castel Gandolfo, Palazzo Fava, and Ferrara's National Art Gallery. His images enabled Mexico's life-size Sistine Chapel reconstruction and appear in limited-edition publications by Scripta Maneant and #logosedizioni. He also contributes to the Bizzarro Bazar series documenting macabre European artifacts.
