Carlo Doglioni is a Full Professor of Geodynamics at Sapienza University of Rome since 1997, concurrently serving as President of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) since 2016. He holds additional positions as Vice-President of Accademia dei Lincei and Research Associate at CNR-IGAG. Previously, he held professorships at Basilicata University and Bari University.
Doglioni earned his Doctorate in Geology from the University of Ferrara in 1981. His research focuses on global geodynamic processes including plate tectonics asymmetry, lithospheric drift mechanisms, earthquake energy generation, and comparative analysis of mountain belt formation. He developed the theory of global tectonic polarity driven by westward lithospheric drift relative to the mantle.
He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications with more than 13,400 citations. His research integrates field observations, geophysical data, and theoretical modeling to understand seismic activity patterns and tectonic evolution.
Honors and Awards:
- Alfred Wegener Award (2009)
- Robert R. Berg AAPG Award (2018)
- Member of Academia Europaea (since 2005)
- Accademia dei Lincei inductee (2009)
- Honorary Professor at Chinese Geosciences University (2015)
As President of INGV, Doglioni leads research initiatives on environmental monitoring, seismic risk assessment, and sustainable energy resources. He has supervised sixteen PhD dissertations and numerous master's theses, mentoring the next generation of earth scientists.
