His administrative leadership includes serving as Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences (2003-2009) and Director of the Postgraduate School of Clinical Pathology (since 2012).
His research spans Cell Biology, Bioenergetics, and Experimental Medicine with particular focus on mitochondrial function, cellular energy metabolism, and pathological mechanisms underlying disease processes. This interdisciplinary work bridges fundamental cellular mechanisms with clinical applications in pathophysiology.
Professor Bernardi has received significant recognition including:
- EMBO Fellowship at University of Helsinki (1984)
- Fogarty Fellowship at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research (1985-1987)
- Resident Corresponding Membership in Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti (2006-present)
- Election to Academia Europaea (2010)
- Premio Ministro Beni e Attività Culturali from Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (2012)
He maintains active scientific citizenship through leadership roles including President of the Italian Group of Biomembranes and Bioenergetics (since 2010) and Council Member of the Associazione di Biologia Cellulare e del Differenziamento (since 2009), demonstrating sustained contribution to the biomedical research community.
