Associate Professor Carlo Caponecchia is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the School of Aviation since 2010. He holds leadership roles in international safety organizations, serving as President of the International Association for Workplace Bullying and Harassment (IAWBH) and contributing to Standards Australia's Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Committee (SF001). His expertise includes representing Australia in developing ISO 45003:2021, the international standard for Psychological Health at Work.
Education includes an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of Newcastle and a PhD in Psychology from UNSW.
Research focuses extensively on human factors in safety systems, with primary interests in:
- Risk perception and communication frameworks
- Workplace psychosocial hazard identification and mitigation
- Human error analysis in transportation systems
- Fatigue management and distraction impacts
- System safety design for emerging work arrangements
Publication analysis (15 most recent) reveals dominant themes in occupational health systems, aviation safety culture, psychosocial risk management, and aging workforce challenges. Methodologically, systematic reviews and applied systems modeling feature prominently, with recent emphasis on pandemic-related impacts on work and travel.
Professional service includes consultancy for industries on safety management systems, expert witness testimony on workplace safety standards, and participation in Safework NSW's MSD Consultative Committee. Current teaching responsibilities include AVIA9101 Safety Risk Management: Human Processes and AVIA3013/GENS5003 Workplace Safety.
