Carla MacKinnon is an animator, researcher, and tutor at the Royal College of Art's School of Communication. She holds a PhD from Arts University Bournemouth focusing on animated documentary production. Her creative practice explores experimental non-fiction through animation, examining organizational structures of creative production and innovative representations of reality.
MacKinnon's films have been showcased internationally at venues including the Wellcome Collection, Institute of Contemporary Art, and FACT Liverpool, and broadcast on BBC4. Her scholarly work investigates authenticity in animation and emerging documentary methodologies.
Her research has been supported by grants from the Wellcome Trust, Arts Council England, and Film London. She maintains professional activities in film festival programming and creative technology projects alongside her academic work.
