Professor Carl Smythe is a faculty member in Cell Biology at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield, where he has served since 2002. He also directs the Mass Spectrometry Centre and previously held leadership roles including Head of the Department of Biomedical Science (2004–2006). His academic journey includes positions as Principal Investigator at the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit (1992–2002), American Cancer Society Senior Research Fellow (1989–1992), and postdoctoral research at the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Group (1985–1989), with a PhD in Biochemistry from Trinity College, Dublin (1981–1985).
- Chair in Cell Biology
- Director of Mass Spectrometry Centre
- PhD, Biochemistry, Trinity College, Dublin
His research spans chromosome integrity, genomic stability, and cellular surveillance systems using molecular cell biology and chemical biology approaches. His lab investigates:
- DNA replication checkpoints
- Ruthenium coordination complexes for DNA targeting
- RNA homeostasis mechanisms (NMD, HD)
- Quality control in aging and disease
- Novel indole derivatives for NMD inhibition
- Whole genome and chemical entity screening
Publications highlight expertise in DNA repair, metal-based therapeutics, and cell cycle regulation, with collaborations across Chemistry, Oncology, and international institutions. Current projects focus on Upf1 helicase functional characterization and NMD inhibitors for therapeutic applications.
