Professor Elizabeth Smythe serves as Professor of Cell Biology, Deputy Head of School, and Director of the Centre for Membrane Interactions and Dynamics at the University of Sheffield's School of Biosciences. With continuous academic service since 2002, she leads research at the intersection of membrane biology and cellular signaling, directing a prominent laboratory focused on endocytic mechanisms and their physiological implications.

Professor Smythe's research centers on molecular mechanisms of cargo sorting in the endocytic pathway, particularly investigating clathrin-coated vesicle dynamics, rab5 GTPase regulation, and membrane microdomain assembly. Her lab employs live-cell microscopy and biochemical approaches to explore how endocytosis integrates with signaling pathways like JAK/STAT in Drosophila, while examining biophysical properties such as membrane tension. This work bridges fundamental cell biology with disease modeling, including development of 3D renal tubule-on-chip systems for Lowe syndrome.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals consistent focus on clathrin-mediated endocytosis (7 articles), signaling-endocytosis crosstalk (12 articles), and Drosophila developmental models (5 articles). Her work demonstrates increasing integration of biophysical approaches with molecular mechanisms since 2015, culminating in 2022 with the identification of clathrin-coated pits as dedicated Akt signaling platforms.
