California Institute of Technology (Caltech)معرفی
Carl S. Parker is a Professor of Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), affiliated with the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He earned a B.A. from the University of Rochester (1973) and a Ph.D. from Washington University (St. Louis) (1977). His career at Caltech spans assistant (1981-87), associate (1987-92), and full professor roles (1992-99 in Chemical Biology, 1999-present in Biochemistry). He served as Executive Officer from 2000-04.
- Education: B.A., University of Rochester (1973); Ph.D., Washington University (1977)
His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of gene expression, particularly how cells respond to physiological stress like heat shock through transcriptional activation of heat shock proteins (HSPs). His lab investigates the regulatory role of the heat shock transcription factor (HSF), including its nuclear localization, trimerization, and DNA-binding dynamics. Key work includes identifying the domain responsible for nuclear transport (residues 390-420 of dHSF) and cloning the nuclear transport protein dKap-α3 in Drosophila.
The Parker lab’s publications include studies on nuclear localization sequences in HSF and the use of metallointercalators to inhibit transcription factor binding. These works span molecular chaperone function, DNA intercalation, and protein-DNA interaction dynamics.
Lab members include Tianxin Chen (Cynthia), Aracely Sustaita, and others, though formal advisee names are not explicitly listed. The lab’s work intersects with developmental regulation of stress responses and structural analysis of transcriptional activation domains.
